Nandini Wildlife Sanctury

Nandini Wildlife Sanctuary is located just 28 kms from Jammu and is virtually a paradise for lovers of nature and wildlife. The sanctuary derives its name from Nandini village. The region play hosts to a large number of rare and endangered species of mammals and birds. It supports 8 species of mammals and a wide variety of bird species. Much acclaim has been accorded to the Nandini Wildlife Sanctuary, famous for its diversity of wildlife and best known for wonderful species of pheasants.

Best time to visit:
March- May (Bird watching).
September- March (for other forms of wildlife).

What to see at Nandini Wildlife Sanctuary:
Animals - Some of the animals to be sighted in this sanctuary include the Porcupine, Leopard, Wild Boar, Rhesus Monkey, Bharal, Goral, Indian Fox, Barking Deer, Grey Langur, Civet Cats (two species), Hare, Mongoose, Five-Striped Squirrel etc.

Birds - If you are a bird lover there is a bagful of attractions for you too. A significant population of pheasants can be found here along with blue rock pigeon, bee-eaters, the Babblers, Indian mynah, great jungle fowl, chakor etc. A great attraction of the park is the Indian pea fowl and the Kalij pheasant. It is absolutely a treat to watch these winged creatures dotting the sky or perched in tree tops.


Sanasar

Sanasar named after small local lakes, 'Sana' & 'Sar' is located 20 km west of Patnitop, on the national highway connecting Jammu and Srinagar. It is at an altitude of 2050 mtr above sea level, is a satellite resort of Patnitop, with a cup-shaped meadow surrounded by gigantic conifers. Sanasar, the mini Gulmarg and one of the remotest region of India, is a wonderful hill station in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. A place for a quiet holidays. Recently it has been developed as a golf course for its tourists. While visiting Sanasar, you are provided opportunities for paragliding, parasailing and horse riding also. All these adventure sports activities are controlled by J&K government authorities. The place is a paradise for those who want to explore their latent sporting spirits and sportsmanship. It is particularly famous for the wide range of sporting activities. It is the hub of adventure sport activities in Jammu region. At 11 km from Patnitop, Natha Top offers scenic views of the mighty western (Kishtwar) Himalayas and the lower Shivalik range. The Bramha Massif, with its prominent peaks of Brahma 1 and 2 & Flat Top, is clearly visible. Eight kilometres down the road, from Natha Top, is Sanasar, with Matha top falling en-route. As you approach Sanasar, the range on the right is Shanta Ridge, with the ShankPal Nag temple situated at its highest point of 2800 mts.

Best Time To Visit: May-June and September-October.

Major Attractions:

Tandem Paragliding Joyrides: Sanasar offers Tandem (pilot+passenger) paragliding joyrides. Sanasar is the second site after Solang Nallah-Manali, in north India, to offer such tandem rides. The low flying ride, take off area, is near the parking lot, with a flight path over the lake of Sansar, to landing in the meadow, below. The 'over a minute' short flight attaining an altitude of 150-200 feet, makes it one of the safest, enjoyable paragliding experience, in India. The high flying site is at Natha Top and offers an 8- to 10 minute flight, depending on the wind condition, 1500-2000 feet high, tandem paragliding experience.

Trekking and nature walks:

Shank Pal Temple : is located on the Shank Pal ridge at an altitude of 2800 mts and is a 5 hr moderate trek. The 400 yr old temple, is dedicated to Nag Shank Pal. No mortar has been used, to join the stones of the temple.

Ladoo Ladi: (meaning a boy and a girl, in local dialect) is a soft nature walk of 4 km, starting from Madha Top.

Shanta Gala: is a pass on the Shanta ridge and offers the view of the Panchari valley on the other side of the ridge. The pass leads to the Lander area.

Surni Kund: is a small pond on the high Shank Pal ridge, 2km from the Shank Pal Nag temple, it is a 7 hr demanding trek from Sanasar. Besides this one can enjoy, wilderness Adventure Camps at Sanasar, Rock climbing, Abseiling.

Climate: There is a requirement of cottons in summers, but thick and warm woolens in winters as the temperature goes down to 0 degrees. There is a requirement of woolens in rainy season too.

Accommodation: Sanasar, being a remote area, offers only J&KTDC's tourists bungalows and self contained huts. Both type of accommodation units are well equipped with basic modern amenities.

How To Reach: The most convenient way to access Sanasar is to travel in your own vehicle. The other option would be hiring a taxi from Jammu (119 km). Taxis are available from Jammu at reasonable rates.


Patnitop

Patnitop
Patnitop or Patni Top is a hilltop tourist location at about 112 kms from Jammu in Udhampur district, it lies on Jammu-Srinagar national Highway. Situated on a plateau in the Shiwalik belt of the Himalayas, enveloped by thickly wooded forests, Patnitop is at an altitude of 2,024 m (6,640 ft). The river Chenab flows in close proximity to this location. It offers beautiful picnic spots, peaceful walks and breathtaking views of the valley of the Chenab basin and the Pir Panjal range.

The name 'Patnitop ' is a distortion of the original name of the place, "Patan Da Talab" meaning "Pond of the Princess". In olden times a pond existed in the meadows and a certain princess often used to bathe there. Some part of the pond still exists near the local youth hostel.

Relatively unknown, compared to the other tourist spots in the state Patnitop is no less beautiful or serene. The meadow is surrounded by dense woods and lush greenery of Pines. Tracks lead to pockets where time stands still and calm prevails. In winter, the resort is generally covered with a thick mantle of snow thus providing opportunities for various snow games including skiing. It is the best developed tourist spot of Jammu and is second to none in its natural charm, climate, pine forests and lush green cover. There are several picnic spots in Patnitop, as pine forests on all sides surround it. This area is perfect for nature walks. Tours and travel to Patnitop usually involves a lot of picnicking.

There are three fresh water springs at Patnitop and it is believed that the waters here are medicinal. There are facilities for those interested in pony rides and camping activities.

Other Places to visit near Patnitop:

Sudh Mahadev Temple: The Sudh Mahadev Temple is said to be 2800 years old with a strong mythological connection. The temple houses a natural black marble `lingam`. Devak stream flows nearby where people can take a bath before entering the temple, it is believed that bath in it relieves a devotee of all sins. Mysteriously the Devak stream disappears a few kilometers downstream. The Sudh Mahadeva Temple was built 2800 years ago on the spot where the Siva devotee was accidentally killed by lord Shiva's trishul, while he was trying to protect his consort, Parvati. Lord Shiva realized his mistake and wanted to bring the devotee, Sudheet back to life but he preferred dying at the feet of the Lord. To commemorate the place, a broken trident or trishul can be seen at the temple. Hundreds of Lord Shiva devotees come to the temple to seek the divine blessings of Lord Shiva. The festivities on Shivaratri are worth attending, It is one of the sacred Hindu pilgrimages.

Gauri Kund Gauri Kund is at a very short distance from Sudh Mahadev. It is basically a spring. Legend has it that Goddess Parvati used to bath here daily before paying obeisance to Sudmahadev. This spring gets its name from Parvati.

Mantalai Mantalai is a place that is few kilometers further from Sudh Mahadev, Mantalai is a picturesque place. It is surrounded by a dense cover of green deodar forests. Legend says that the marriage of Lord Shiva with the Goddess Parvati took place here.

The Naag (cobra) temple : The ancient Naag Temple said to have been built 600 years ago and still commands a huge interest in both devotees and tourists. On Naga Panchmi festival, devotees from far and wide come here to seek the blessings of the Snake God. The isolated scenic beauty is breathtakingly panoramic as the whole valley can be seen below while rolling green hills surround the temple.

Activities to do at Patnitop:

Trekking: The complete tourist circuit covers Jammu-Katra-Vaishno Deviji, Kud-Sanasar, Patnitop-Gourikund, Sudmahadev, Mantali, extending upto Latti-Dhuna. Patnitop is ideal place for trekking in this region. In Summer all trekking routes are open while some are open in winter too.

Some of the routes are:

Billo ki powri - Billo ki powri is a staircase of 270 steps carved across a mountain face. These steps lie across a stone face between Kud and Patnitop. This is a moderate day trek that takes around 1 to 2 hours to complete. The climb starts just after Hotel Jai Skahan and ends at the Patnitop-Sanasar road, two kilometres from Patnitop.

Patnitop to Sudh Mahadev - This 15 kilometre / 5–6 hours moderate day trek, starts near Hotel Green Top Patnitop and ends at the historical Shiv temple at Sudh Mahadev. This temple is believed to be 2800 years old. The trek winds its way across Shivgarh ridge and affords beautiful views over Chenani- Mantalai Valley.

Trek to Shiv Garh:- This 11 kilometre / 6 hours difficult day trek starts and ends at Patnitop. This trek leads you over an unnamed "dhar" (or ridge) near Shivgarh, and involves a difficult ascent and descent over an unmarked trail.

Madhatop trek: A 5 Km trek from Patnitop along the Sanasar Road will bring you to Madhatop. Its salubrious climes and snow capped mountains makes it a haven for adventure tourists

Skiing: Skiing courses are conducted at Patnitop in the months of January and Feburary. During winter mionths there are introductory courses for tourists / beginners at gentle gradient slopes of Patnitop. At Madhatop (5/6 Kms from Patni top on Sanasar Road) excellent possibilities for all kind of skiing exist.

Sledging: Locally also provide wooden sledges for riding.

Accommodation There are quite a few hotels and tourist huts managed by the state government that provide amenities to visiting tourists.

How to Reach Road: It lieas at a distance of 112 kms from Jammu, buses and taxis are available from Jammu/Katra/Udhampur. By a taxi it takes about 3 and a half hours to reach Patnitop and bus takes about 5 hours.


Machail Mata

The Machail Mata temple is one of the most important temples in the Jammu region that is sheltered in an alluring location bestowed with rich natural beauty.

Machail Mata is a Goddess Durga also known by the name Kaali or Chandi. It is Goddess Durga's shrine popularly known as Machail Mata, located in village Machel, Kishtwar at a distance of about 290 km from Jammu city, one can reach the Machail Mata temple by hiring a cab from the city.

Thousands of people visit the shrine every year mainly from Jammu region.The pilgrimage ''Chhadi Yatra'' happens in the month of August every year and thousands of people visit the shrine every year during 'Chhadi Yatra'. There are lot of supernatural happenings that the pilgrims experience and report.

To reach the shrine, buses are available from Jammu, Udhampur, Ramnagar, Bhaderwah. One can also hire a cab as well. It takes approximately 10 hours by road from Jammu to Gulabgarh. The Gulabgarh is the base camp. From Gulabgarh, the foot journey starts, that is 32 km. Usually people take 2 days to reach the shrine by foot. On the way there are many villages, where one can stay in the night. The chaddi takes three days to reach machel. Many people organize roadside 'langers' (free food points) on the way to the Gulabgarh. Government of Jammu & Kashmir also arranges basic amenities for the pilgrims.

Other mean of reaching the shrine is by helicopter from Jammu and Gulabgarh. The helipad is only 100 meters from the shrine. Beside this the journey to Machail Mata Temple also offers many scenic beauties of the nature.


Raghunath Temple

Built between 1835 and 1860 by Maharaja Gulab Singh and his son and was completed by his son, Maharaja Ranbir Singh. The Raghunath Temple complex with 7 shrines is one of the largest in northern India. It is Situated in the heart of the city and surrounded by a group of other temples, this temple, dedicated to Lord Rama, is outstanding and unique in northern India. Its inner sanctums contain gigantic statues of deities and numerous 'lingams'. It contains representatives of almost the entire Hindu pantheon. The chief deities in these temples are different incarnations of Lord Vishnu, Lord Surya and Lord Shiva. The temple is renowned for its revered inscriptions. The complex houses a rich collection of ancient texts and manuscripts. The inner walls of the main temple are covered with gold sheet on three sides. There are many galleries with innumerable 'saligrams'. The surrounding temples are dedicated to various Hindu deities from the epic Ramayana. Aap Shambhu Temple Sathrian, is a temple situated at Sathrian in Roopnagar area of Jammu city. The stone temple has self-made stone Lingam. According to a legend, in the times immemorial this entire place was an uninhabited jungle, the milky cows and buffaloes used to come to the Lingam after grazing and shed entire milk on the Lingam.

The Mughal architectural style is prevalent in these temples, amply shown by the arches, niches and surfaces. An image of the king Ranbir Singh and an idol of Lord Hanuman are placed in the entrance. A Sanskrit library, contains the rarest and richest collections of manuscripts and ancient books, is functioning in the temple. It is a perfect religious place in which historians find more valuable materials.

The temple also encompass various incarnations of Lord Vishnu and majestic Shiv Lingams. Devotees flock to this temple to witness the sacred Hindu rituals, including daily pujas and aartis and is thus a popular temple among devotees and tourists.


Bahu Fort

Bahu Fort 5 kms away from the central part of the city, Bahu Fort is positioned on the left bank of river Tawi, it is the oldest construction in Jammu. The fort renovated by rulers of Dogra in a later period, was constructed by Raja Bahulochan, nearly 300 years back. it has an interesting story behind it. It is believed that Raja Jambu Lochan, brother to Raja Bahulochan and the king credited with establishing the city, saw a curious sight of a tiger and goat drinking water from the Tawi river, without the tiger attacking the meek goat. He saw this as a divine sign, one that spelt peaceful coexistence, and decided to establish the city of Jammu here, His vision was to make such a city where strong and weak people would live together peacefully sans any hostility towards each other.

The Bahu fort is quite renowned for Maha Kali temple, famous by the name of Bawey Wali Mata, positioned inside its premises. The Mahakali Temple (aka Bave Waali Mata) within its premises, in favour of the deity who is believed to preside over the region. The temple of Bawey Wali Mata was constructed in 1822, just after Maharaja Gulab Singh was coronated. It is often called the temple of Mahakali and the deity of this temple is regarded second only to Goddess Vaishno Devi if mystical power is taken into account. Every Sunday and Tuesday, a huge number of pilgrims come to this temple and take part in "Tawi flowing worship". In fact this temple is one of the most esteemed temples of Goddess Kali in India.

A majestic garden, known as Bagh-e-Bahu with extensive lawns beautifully filled with flowers and plants is a favorite picnic spot and surrounds the Bahu Fort. There is aquarium in garden Bagh-i-Bahu, which is one of the subcontinent's largest underground aquarium, housing over 400 varieties of fresh and marine water fish - all maintained in a state-of-the-art shape. The best time to visit this shrine is during the months of March to October, even though the temple is open for devotees all throughout the year.

How to reach Vaishno Devi temple Mata Vaishno Devi is easily accessible by both air and land means of transport. Most pilgrims prefer to take the train or bus till Jammu and then opt for either buses or cabs till Katra. Buses also ply directly to Katra from Delhi. From Jammu, it takes about 1 - 1.5 hrs drive. The way to the shrine is an uphill climb which could either be negotiated by stairs or walking with sticks. Helicopter services are also available. A one way ride from Katra (base) to Sanjichhat costs INR 800 per person. Shiv Khori is situated in district Reasi at distance of 85 Kms from Katra and 105 kms from Jammu city, depicts the natural formation of Shivlingum. It is one of the most venerated cave shrines of Lord Shiva in the region. The cave is a natural wonder. Shaped like the "Damroo" of Mahadev it is wide at both ends while congested at the centre. The width of the cave is different at different places. At some point it is so narrow that a person can even barely crawl there. At some other place there is width of more than 100 meters. The Holy cave is more than 200 mts long & houses 4 feet high Svayambhu Lingum, which constantly baths in a milky lime fluid dripping from the ceiling. The cave is full of natural impression & images of various Hindu Deities & full of divine feelings. Shiv Khori is also known as "Home of Gods" is famous for the cave shrine of Lord Shiva.

Legend has it that a demon named Bhasmasur, after a long meditation of Lord Shiva, obtained the boon that he could end the life of anyone by placeing his hand on their head. After obtaining it, this devil had the evil intentions to end Lord Shiva. On seeing the evil design of the demon, Lord Shiva ran to save himself from the powers of the demon and entered through the narrow entrance of this cave which is now known as Shiv Khori. Thereafter, Lord Vishnu in the guise of Mohini came and lured the demon to dance to her tune. As the demon started dancing exactly as per the actions of Mohini, the said demon kept his hand on his own head and destroyed himself with his own powers. As per the legend, 33 crores deities exist in this cave in shape of pindis.

How to reach :

The Shiv-Khori Shrine is very well connected to Katra / Jammu by road. People can reach here by taxi/car. Buses from Katra are also available.

Ranbireshwar Temple - Located on Shalimar Road near the New Secretariat and built by Maharaja Ranbir Singh in 1883 AD, this historic temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It has one central 'lingam' measuring seven-and-a-half ft in height, twelve Shiva 'lingams' of crystal measuring from 15" to 38" and galleries with thousands of others carved on stone slabs.

Mansar

Harking back to the legends of Mahabharata, Mansar and Surinsar Lakes are linked with Arjun and his son, Babar Vahan. The myth suggests that Babar Vahan mistakenly killed his own father, and to bring him back to life, used the mani from Sheshnag (or the six-headed snake god), which he got from creating a surang (or a passageway) with his arrow.

The site where he made the surang is now known as Surinsar and where he emerged with the mani is called Mansar. These two together are therefore known as the Mansar and Surinsar Lakes. The lake now stands surrounded by temples and shrines, which makes the lake popular among pilgrims, who take a dip in its holy waters as a ritual. The lake is also a popular boating spot, where you can even feed the multitude of fish.

The Mansar Lake is around 62 km and the Surinsar Lake, which is an extension to the Mansar Lake, is around 24 km from the main city of Jammu.

Mansar

Mansar is a beautiful lake fringed by forest-covered hills, over a mile in length by half-a-mile in width. Besides being a popular excursion destination in Jammu, it is also a holy site, sharing the legend and sanctity of Lake Mansarovar. Mansar lake, with its length more than a mile and width half-a-mile, is a very attractive lake in the midst of lusting greeneries surrounded by forest-covered hills. It is considered as a very holy site known from mythological periods sharing the sanctity and legacy of Mansa Sarovar. It is a very popular base of tourists.

On the eastern bank of Mansar Lake, there is the Sheshnag Temple, housing a figure of a snake with six heads. It is believed that it is auspicious for newly wed couples to seek blessings of Sheshnag by performing three parikarma around the lake. Holy dip in the Mansar Lake is assumed to be purifying the sins.

A temple of Durga and two other ancient temples Narasimha and Parvathi Shiva (Umapati Mahadev) are located in the close proximity of the Mansar Lake.
