Nandini Wildlife Sanctuary is located just 28 kms from Jammu and is virtually a paradise for lovers of nature and wildlife. The sanctuary derives its name from Nandini village. The region play hosts to a large number of rare and endangered species of mammals and birds. It supports 8 species of mammals and a wide variety of bird species. What to see at Nandini Wildlife Sanctuary:
Animals - Some of the animals to be sighted in this sanctuary include the Porcupine, Leopard, Wild Boar, Rhesus Monkey, Bharal, Goral, Indian Fox, Barking Deer, Grey Langur, Civet Cats (two species), Hare, Mongoose, Five-Striped Squirrel etc.

Birds - If you are a bird lover there is a bagful of attractions for you too. Tandem Paragliding Joyrides: Sanasar offers Tandem (pilot+passenger) paragliding joyrides. Sanasar is the second site after Solang Nallah-Manali, in north India, to offer such tandem rides. The low flying ride, take off area, is near the parking lot, with a flight path over the lake of Sansar, to landing in the meadow, below. The 'over a minute' short flight attaining an altitude of 150-200 feet, makes it one of the safest, enjoyable paragliding experience, in India. The high flying site is at Natha Top and offers an 8- to 10 minute flight, depending on the wind condition, 1500-2000 feet high, tandem paragliding experience.

Trekking and nature walks:

Shank Pal Temple : is located on the Shank Pal ridge at an altitude of 2800 mts and is a 5 hr moderate trek. The 400 yr old temple, is dedicated to Nag Shank Pal. No mortar has been used, to join the stones of the temple.

Ladoo Ladi: (meaning a boy and a girl, in local dialect) is a soft nature walk of 4 km, starting from Madha Top.

Shanta Gala: is a pass on the Shanta ridge and offers the view of the Panchari valley on the other side of the ridge. The pass leads to the Lander area.

Surni Kund: is a small pond on the high Shank Pal ridge, 2km from the Shank Pal Nag temple, it is a 7 hr demanding trek from Sanasar. Besides this one can enjoy, wilderness Adventure Camps at Sanasar, Rock climbing, Abseiling.

Climate: There is a requirement of cottons in summers, but thick and warm woolens in winters as the temperature goes down to 0 degrees. There is a requirement of woolens in rainy season too.

Accommodation: Sanasar, being a remote area, offers only J&KTDC's tourists bungalows and self contained huts. Both type of accommodation units are well equipped with basic modern amenities.

How To Reach: The most convenient way to access Sanasar is to travel in your own vehicle. The other option would be hiring a taxi from Jammu (119 km). Taxis are available from Jammu at reasonable rates.

Patnitop or Patni Top is a hilltop tourist location at about 112 kms from Jammu in Udhampur district, it lies on Jammu-Srinagar national Highway. Situated on a plateau in the Shiwalik belt of the Himalayas, enveloped by thickly wooded forests, Patnitop is at an altitude of 2,024 m (6,640 ft). The river Chenab flows in close proximity to this location. It offers beautiful picnic spots, peaceful walks and breathtaking views of the valley of the Chenab basin and the Pir Panjal range.

The name 'Patnitop ' is a distortion of the original name of the place, "Patan Da Talab" meaning "Pond of the Princess". In olden times a pond existed in the meadows and a certain princess often used to bathe there. Some part of the pond still exists near the local youth hostel.

Relatively unknown, compared to the other tourist spots in the state Patnitop is no less beautiful or serene. The meadow is surrounded by dense woods and lush greenery of Pines. Tracks lead to pockets where time stands still and calm prevails. In winter, the resort is generally covered with a thick mantle of snow thus providing opportunities for various snow games including skiing. It is the best developed tourist spot of Jammu and is second to none in its natural charm, climate, pine forests and lush green cover. Sudh Mahadev Temple: The Sudh Mahadev Temple is said to be 2800 years old with a strong mythological connection. The temple houses a natural black marble `lingam`. Devak stream flows nearby where people can take a bath before entering the temple, it is believed that bath in it relieves a devotee of all sins. Mysteriously the Devak stream disappears a few kilometers downstream. The Sudh Mahadeva Temple was built 2800 years ago on the spot where the Siva devotee was accidentally killed by lord Shiva's trishul, while he was trying to protect his consort, Parvati. Lord Shiva realized his mistake and wanted to bring the devotee, Sudheet back to life but he preferred dying at the feet of the Lord. To commemorate the place, a broken trident or trishul can be seen at the temple. Hundreds of Lord Shiva devotees come to the temple to seek the divine blessings of Lord Shiva. The festivities on Shivaratri are worth attending, It is one of the sacred Hindu pilgrimages.

Gauri Kund Gauri Kund is at a very short distance from Sudh Mahadev. It is basically a spring. Legend has it that Goddess Parvati used to bath here daily before paying obeisance to Sudmahadev. This spring gets its name from Parvati.

Mantalai Mantalai is a place that is few kilometers further from Sudh Mahadev, Mantalai is a picturesque place. It is surrounded by a dense cover of green deodar forests. Legend says that the marriage of Lord Shiva with the Goddess Parvati took place here.

The Naag (cobra) temple : The ancient Naag Temple said to have been built 600 years ago and still commands a huge interest in both devotees and tourists. On Naga Panchmi festival, devotees from far and wide come here to seek the blessings of the Snake God. The isolated scenic beauty is breathtakingly panoramic as the whole valley can be seen below while rolling green hills surround the temple.

Activities to do at Patnitop:

Trekking: The complete tourist circuit covers Jammu-Katra-Vaishno Deviji, Kud-Sanasar, Patnitop-Gourikund, Sudmahadev, Mantali, extending upto Latti-Dhuna. Patnitop is ideal place for trekking in this region. In Summer all trekking routes are open while some are open in winter too.

Billo ki powri - Billo ki powri is a staircase of 270 steps carved across a mountain face. These steps lie across a stone face between Kud and Patnitop. This is a moderate day trek that takes around 1 to 2 hours to complete. The climb starts just after Hotel Jai Skahan and ends at the Patnitop-Sanasar road, two kilometres from Patnitop.

Patnitop to Sudh Mahadev - This 15 kilometre / 5–6 hours moderate day trek, starts near Hotel Green Top Patnitop and ends at the historical Shiv temple at Sudh Mahadev. This temple is believed to be 2800 years old. The trek winds its way across Shivgarh ridge and affords beautiful views over Chenani- Mantalai Valley.

Trek to Shiv Garh:- This 11 kilometre / 6 hours difficult day trek starts and ends at Patnitop. This trek leads you over an unnamed "dhar" (or ridge) near Shivgarh, and involves a difficult ascent and descent over an unmarked trail.

Madhatop trek: A 5 Km trek from Patnitop along the Sanasar Road will bring you to Madhatop. Its salubrious climes and snow capped mountains makes it a haven for adventure tourists

Skiing: Skiing courses are conducted at Patnitop in the months of January and Feburary. During winter mionths there are introductory courses for tourists / beginners at gentle gradient slopes of Patnitop. At Madhatop (5/6 Kms from Patni top on Sanasar Road) excellent possibilities for all kind of skiing exist.

Sledging: Locally also provide wooden sledges for riding.

Accommodation There are quite a few hotels and tourist huts managed by the state government that provide amenities to visiting tourists.

How to Reach Road: It lieas at a distance of 112 kms from Jammu, buses and taxis are available from Jammu/Katra/Udhampur. By a taxi it takes about 3 and a half hours to reach Patnitop and bus takes about 5 hours.

Built between 1835 and 1860 by Maharaja Gulab Singh and his son and was completed by his son, Maharaja Ranbir Singh. The Raghunath Temple complex with 7 shrines is one of the largest in northern India. Its inner sanctums contain gigantic statues of deities and numerous 'lingams'. It contains representatives of almost the entire Hindu pantheon. Aap Shambhu Temple Sathrian, is a temple situated at Sathrian in Roopnagar area of Jammu city. The stone temple has self-made stone Lingam. According to a legend, in the times immemorial this entire place was an uninhabited jungle, the milky cows and buffaloes used to come to the Lingam after grazing and shed entire milk on the Lingam.

The Mughal architectural style is prevalent in these temples, amply shown by the arches, niches and surfaces. An image of the king Ranbir Singh and an idol of Lord Hanuman are placed in the entrance. Bahu Fort 5 kms away from the central part of the city, Bahu Fort is positioned on the left bank of river Tawi, it is the oldest construction in Jammu. The fort renovated by rulers of Dogra in a later period, was constructed by Raja Bahulochan, nearly 300 years back. it has an interesting story behind it. It is believed that Raja Jambu Lochan, brother to Raja Bahulochan and the king credited with establishing the city, saw a curious sight of a tiger and goat drinking water from the Tawi river, without the tiger attacking the meek goat. The Bahu fort is quite renowned for Maha Kali temple, famous by the name of Bawey Wali Mata, positioned inside its premises. The Mahakali Temple (aka Bave Waali Mata) within its premises, in favour of the deity who is believed to preside over the region. The temple of Bawey Wali Mata was constructed in 1822, just after Maharaja Gulab Singh was coronated. It is often called the temple of Mahakali and the deity of this temple is regarded second only to Goddess Vaishno Devi if mystical power is taken into account. How to reach Vaishno Devi temple Mata Vaishno Devi is easily accessible by both air and land means of transport. On seeing the evil design of the demon, Lord Shiva ran to save himself from the powers of the demon and entered through the narrow entrance of this cave which is now known as Shiv Khori. Thereafter, Lord Vishnu in the guise of Mohini came and lured the demon to dance to her tune. As the demon started dancing exactly as per the actions of Mohini, the said demon kept his hand on his own head and destroyed himself with his own powers. As per the legend, 33 crores deities exist in this cave in shape of pindis.

Harking back to the legends of Mahabharata, Mansar and Surinsar Lakes are linked with Arjun and his son, Babar Vahan. The myth suggests that Babar Vahan mistakenly killed his own father, and to bring him back to life, used the mani from Sheshnag (or the six-headed snake god), which he got from creating a surang (or a passageway) with his arrow.

The site where he made the surang is now known as Surinsar and where he emerged with the mani is called Mansar. These two together are therefore known as the Mansar and Surinsar Lakes. The lake now stands surrounded by temples and shrines, which makes the lake popular among pilgrims, who take a dip in its holy waters as a ritual. The Mansar Lake is around 62 km and the Surinsar Lake, which is an extension to the Mansar Lake, is around 24 km from the main city of Jammu.

Mansar

Mansar is a beautiful lake fringed by forest-covered hills, over a mile in length by half-a-mile in width. Besides being a popular excursion destination in Jammu, it is also a holy site, sharing the legend and sanctity of Lake Mansarovar. Mansar lake, with its length more than a mile and width half-a-mile, is a very attractive lake in the midst of lusting greeneries surrounded by forest-covered hills. It is considered as a very holy site known from mythological periods sharing the sanctity and legacy of Mansa Sarovar. It is a very popular base of tourists.

On the eastern bank of Mansar Lake, there is the Sheshnag Temple, housing a figure of a snake with six heads.
